The Biodiversity Finance Initiative (BIOFIN) is a global program led by the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) that supports countries in developing sustainable financing solutions for biodiversity conservation. In Bangladesh, Arannayk Foundation is facilitating a nationwide consultation process under the leadership of the Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change (MoEFCC) to support the development of the country's Biodiversity Finance Plan.
The initiative aims to strengthen the evidence base for mobilizing sustainable public and private financing for biodiversity conservation. It supports Bangladesh in identifying financing needs, assessing biodiversity expenditures, reviewing policy and institutional frameworks, and developing practical financial solutions to help achieve national biodiversity targets and commitments under the Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework.
The project brings together stakeholders from Bangladesh's diverse ecosystems, including forests, wetlands, coastal areas, hill tracts, river systems, agro-ecosystems, and urban landscapes. Through district-level consultations, focus group discussions, sectoral dialogues, and national validation workshops, it captures ecosystem-specific priorities, financing gaps, and institutional challenges while ensuring inclusive and gender-responsive participation.
Implemented from November 2025 to August 2026, the initiative contributes to strengthening Bangladesh's biodiversity finance architecture by generating evidence-based recommendations that support long-term conservation planning and sustainable resource mobilization.
